Student employees should be managed in much the same way as other staff members.
Performance reviews provide the supervisor with an opportunity to give feedback to the student about their performance. Feedback should include a discussion of the student employee's strengths as well as areas needing improvement. Informal performance reviews should be given on a regular basis.
These reviews can be as simple as a casual check-in between student and supervisor, and does not have to be in writing. Even though the staff member is a student employee working a short amount of time, it is always a good idea to give feedback and also let the student know you appreciate the work they are doing.
If the student employee is not performing satisfactorily, the supervisor may terminate the student's employment at any time. There is no formal termination process, however it is suggested that the supervisor meet with the student at least once prior to the termination in order to discuss the poor performance, and to give the student a reasonable amount of time to improve their performance.
The student's employment is "at will", meaning that the student can resign from their Work Study position at any time, with or without reason.
