What is the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Leadership Grant?

Student EDI Leadership Grants are designed to support students with ideas for events, projects, programs, and initiatives that reflect and promote equity, diversity and inclusion for the MassArt community. The grant provides financial support to help make your ideas a reality. EDI and Student Development staff are also available to help with logistics and organization. Students are welcome to apply as individuals or on behalf of a student group. Collaborations between student groups and campus-wide departments are strongly encouraged.

If you have a great idea and need help figuring out how to reserve space, get support from other departments, create effective publicity and inclusive programs, then we can help!

Please be sure to read the Grant Guidelines listed below before completing the grant application.

Grant Guidelines

  • EDI Leadership Grant proposals should fit one or more of the following core themes:

    • Access & Equity: Programs and initiatives that support attracting, retaining, and engaging a diverse community of students.

    • Community Engagement: Programs and initiatives that establish new and deeper connections within MassArt and/or between MassArt and off-site constituencies (e.g., ProArts Consortium, Colleges of the Fenway, MassArt alumni, prospective students, neighboring communities, etc.) especially with those that MassArt has not connected with in the past.

    • Career Development: Includes workshops, panel discussions, clinics, and symposiums at venues that are open to the MassArt community and address issues of equity, diversity and inclusion and prepares students for a life of responsible citizenship.

    • Community Learning & Development: Programs and initiatives that increase the capacity for equitable scholarship and leadership by equipping community members with tools for citizenship with a diverse, inclusive, and global community.

    • Expanding Outlooks (Social/Political/Cultural): Includes programs and initiatives and that recognize and address systems of oppression or acknowledges and promotes the experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives of MassArt’s diverse community

  • Applications should be submitted no less than 30 days before your proposed project. This is to ensure proper planning and promotion for a successful event.

  • Grants of up to $1,000 may be awarded. Partial grants may be awarded; for example, you may be awarded half the amount you request and be required to seek remaining funds from other departments. If you are looking for over $500, then we strongly encourage you to seek funding from other departments. If you need suggestions, let us know.

  • Grant money is awarded in the form of reimbursements, which require receipts, or purchases/payments made by the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion or Student Development on your behalf. Proper planning, well in advance, will help you avoid paying for expenses out of pocket.

  • If your project involves paying a visiting artist an honorarium, then all required forms for payment must be completed and submitted at least three weeks in advance of the event date to ensure timely payment.

  • All of your publicity materials - physical, online, or otherwise - for the project must acknowledge both the Office of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion and Student Development as sponsors (e.g. “sponsored by” or “co-sponsored by” where there are multiple sponsors). All events must also be included on the MassArt Events Calendar.

Note: Programs/Events for which grant applications are submitted must be free and open to all members of the MassArt community.

Reflect, Promote, and Support Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

For more information about diversity and social justice at MassArt, please review MassArt’s Plan for a More Diverse, Inclusive, and Socially Just University. Please note that an event that simply involves a diverse group of people does not necessarily mean it “promotes” diversity. You will need to clearly demonstrate how the event not only reflects, but promotes and supports equity, diversity and inclusion.
